Why I cancelled my Birchbox

Why I cancelled my Birchbox

This is a very belated post, I started writing it but never got around to finishing it. I guess because of my overall disappointment. Sorry!

January Birchbox 2016

This box was in conjunction with Pinterest, hence the very cute box.

Now this review may seem a little negative and leads on to why I decided to cancel this subscription service.

Must Have Products From 2015

Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone had fun over the festive period. I had a great time with family and managed to fly to the US to see the boyfriend which was a bonus. I hope this year brings you everything you wish for!

2015 was a great year for finding new products and giving some love to some golden oldies (that sounds odd doesn’t it). I tried to keep the list small, so here we go:

Birchbox December 2015

This has just appeared on my door step and I am so excited! I was unsure whether to keep my Birchbox subscription but thought I would hold out until Christmas to see what they had to offer and I am so pleased I did.

If you don’t mind a spoiler, take a look!

Keeping Up with the Red Heads

Keeping Up with the Red Heads

I’ve had my ginger hair for two years and I’ve been contemplating a change for a while, so this past month I took the plunge!

Red hair is notorious for being difficult to maintain! It’s very quick to fade and that makes dyeing a frequent occurrence. The colour I wanted to go for was something more wintry, I wanted more of a red/cherry shade. After spending quite some time in the dye aisle of Superdrug, I picked up Garnier Olia Dark Garnet. I have used the same brand but the 7.4 shade and quite liked it. I felt that my hair was a lot less dry after colouring so I thought I would definitely give this one a whirl.

October Favourites

October Favourites

Where did this month go? The weather here in England has turned terribly cold, I don’t like it! For such a pale girl, I love the sun!

wpid-wp-1445187606615.jpeg

The month of October has involved a lot of travelling; at the start of the month I flew to America for by bf’s sister’s wedding. The wedding was in a gorgeous barn! On the hour drive up to the wedding I had to do my makeup in the car, I know girls, we’ve all been there! But on the day I was to meet my boyfriend’s entire family, I wanted to make sure I looked the part. The products I took with me on the trip used are some of my all time favourites!

  • The original Urban Decay Naked Palette – cult staple I am sure most of you know how amazing this palette is!
  • Makeup Forever HD foundation (the lid seems to have run away from me this month) along with the primer. This is the best liquid foundation I have ever used. I have the lightest shade they do and it works for me 🙂  To my pale girls out there, you need to try this, they have so many shades I’m sure there is one out there for you. I have 110 Pink Porcelain.
  • Kat Von D Tattoo Liner – stays put all day, super black and it’s not too shiny.
  • Maybelline the Falsies – see my review here
  • Sleek contour, blush and highlighter palette. This contains a dupe for the famous Nars blush in orgasm.
  • I’ve been testing out a new concealer by Maybelline. I saw a video by It’sJudyTime reviewing the Better Skin Foundation and thought I would give the concealer a whirl. Even though it looks a little dark in the tube, it covers dark circles well and has good staying power.

October Birchbox 2015

October Birchbox 2015

Here we are for my second review for Birchbox. This month I had the opportunity to pick one of 2 boxes for the October release; one by Birchbox themselves, the other by Stylist. Below is a list of everything that came in both boxes, an ok range of products but not as good as last months.

bb1

Stylist is my favourite magazine and what makes it even better is that it’s FREE! So if you see a man in a yellow jacket, waving a magazine incessantly at you, please take the mag!

Anyway, I had to pick the Stylist one obviously. The box once again came in very cute packaging with the products in a small draw string bag.

Rituals Shower Gel – I love how this smells. I love Rituals stuff in general but never really buy it because of how pricey it can be so I am so happy to have a travel size of this!

Teeny Tiny Bioderma – I’ve been a fan of Bioderma for the past 2 years and have gone through several bottles. I have had a travel size one of these in the past but not this tiny, it’s so cute and will be perfect for another trip I have at the end of the month. It’s great at taking off makeup at the end of the day and doesn’t leave a greasy film on your skin. I have sensitive skin and this doesn’t dry out my skin or cause me any issues.

100% Pure lip glaze – This is made with avocado and cocoa butters so it’s moisturising for the lips and the colour is made by fruit pigments! For a lip glaze, the pigment is quite good but it isn’t very long lasting so you will need to take this with you for touch ups. It’s not a colour I would usually choose, it looks more on the brown side in the bullet but when it is applied it comes across as a more ‘your lips but better’ shade. The packaging on this is also really cute! It’s nice knowing that it’s made with kind ingredients for your lips, I wonder if I will notice a difference!

English Laundry perfume sample – A mini back story behind this, I actually didn’t receive this in my box. When I opened by Birchbox I just had the card, no sample. I emailed Birchbox customer service who were very nice and sent the sample out to me immediately. Now I dislike getting these mini perfume samples, mainly because you can get them in shops for free. Scents are a very personal thing so it’s difficult to send out a sample that all subscribers will enjoy. This scent is floral which is not my thing but I might put it in my handbag as a ‘just in case’ item. It’s not an unpleasant smell, it’s just not something I would choose to wear. Overall, not a massive fan.

Parlour by Jeff Chastain Blow Out Spray –  I actually haven’t had a chance to use this yet as I tend not to blow dry my hair all that often, but I will say it smells lovely! It’s described as a peachy, woody scent which is totally accurate! I may just use it as a hair perfume!

WHEN face mask – Again, I haven’t actually used this yet, you get one face mask to try so I want to save it for when I get on a plane next week! Yes, I will be THAT girl, don’t judge me! My skin gets really dehydrated on planes so I am looking forward to trying this so much. I do love a good face mask! Hopefully it won’t break me out on holiday!

Overall, this Birchbox was ok… I don’t think it was as good as last months and now I am paying full price I wonder if I should keep up with it….. Are you subscribed to any beauty boxes? Do you have one to recommend? If so, let me know in the comments below!

Birchbox September 2015

Birchbox September 2015

Beauty subscriptions are everywhere these days and Birchbox is one of the biggest players in America. I don’t know how I didn’t know that they now operate in the UK. I stumbled across their website and noticed they were doing an offer,September for 50% off a box, to celebrate their 5th US birthday.

I used to be a subscriber to GlossyBox, one of the first major UK beauty subscriptions and I really enjoyed receiving my boxes every month, it’s like Christmas! I stopped my subscription at Uni when I realised I was drowning in products. Subscription services are a gamble, one month you could get a load of products that just aren’t for you, but the following month you could adore everything, it really is down to personal preferences. But because of the Birchbox offer, I really couldn’t resist.

It arrived just a few days after I ordered which was very impressive. This box is specially designed for their birthday and I believe the design of the box often changes. They are very cute and a good size to use later as storage if you choose.

The products come in a little draw string bag which I thought was a really nice touch.

Here are my thoughts and feelings on the products I received this month.wpid-wp-1443174733189.jpeg

Birchbox Birchbrush

This small hairbrush is basically their version of a Tangle Teezer. These briushes are supposed to be more gentle on your hair. In my eyes, my Tangle Teezer can never be replaced, but I think I will throw this in my gym bag. It’s a nice little addition.

Beauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleanser

This smells lovely and it’s always handy to have mini body washes for travel. I am terrible at describing scents, it’s not overly floral, or overly sweet, it’s just a perfect feminine scent without being overly girly. The full size is £8.00 which I think is a little steep for a body wash, so I will enjoy the mini size but won’t be purchasing the full size.

Laqa&Co Lip Pencil in Humble Brag

This was a really cute, good sized, lip pencil, similar to the Revlon Balm Stains or the Clinique Chubby Sticks. It was a little drying but that helped with the staying power. It lasted a good few hours and held up ok when I was eating and drinking which was impressive. This colour is a very bright pink which clashes a tad with my ginger hair, but when I decide to go back to brunette, I will definitely be using this.

Benefit the Professional: License to Blot

I have only tried this once so far, but I did actually notice a difference in my shininess. I wear powder foundation and I do tend to get oily in my tzone and this did make a difference. I applied this after I cleansed and moisturised on my forehead and down my nose. It was very smooth and left a nice base for my powder foundation. I shall keep testing this over the month to see if I notice a dramatic difference.

John Masters Organics Citrus & Neroli Detangler

I applied this detangler onto wet hair and ran my fingers through my hair to distribute it and get rid any knots in my hair. My hair isn’t overly tangley so it’s difficult to tell if this really works… The smells though is really lovely and stayed in my hair over night and until the next day, always a bonus!

Laura Mercier Face Polish

I do love a good exfoliator, it’s important to exfoliate your skin to get rid of all the dead skin cells (ew). I tend to exfoliate once a week because I have sensitive skin. This face polish has a great consistency because it’s very grainy and you can really feel it working. The scent is pretty neutral which I like too. A little bit goes a long way so I’m hoping the mini sample size will last me a while. This was also great timing as I recently ran out of my Origins exfoliator.

Overall, I am really happy with the products I received. For £6.47, I got a lot of products that I will definitely use.  I am doing lots of travelling in October so they will definitely come in handy. I’ve seen a little preview of the October boxes which you have the option to choose between 2 boxes; one is designed by my favourite magazine Stylist and the other is by Birchbox. Click here to see a preview of what’s to come in October! I can’t wait to try some new products next month.
