I’ve wanted to treat myself to a nice lipstick for a while and yesterday I found the perfect opportunity. Charlotte Tilbury has released some new lipstick shades in two different formulas – Matte Revolution and Kiss. These are done in conjunction with a collection of Hollywood A-listers who have created their own perfect shade.
Beauty subscriptions are everywhere these days and Birchbox is one of the biggest players in America. I don’t know how I didn’t know that they now operate in the UK. I stumbled across their website and noticed they were doing an offer,September for 50% off a box, to celebrate their 5th US birthday.
I used to be a subscriber to GlossyBox, one of the first major UK beauty subscriptions and I really enjoyed receiving my boxes every month, it’s like Christmas! I stopped my subscription at Uni when I realised I was drowning in products. Subscription services are a gamble, one month you could get a load of products that just aren’t for you, but the following month you could adore everything, it really is down to personal preferences. But because of the Birchbox offer, I really couldn’t resist.
It arrived just a few days after I ordered which was very impressive. This box is specially designed for their birthday and I believe the design of the box often changes. They are very cute and a good size to use later as storage if you choose.
The products come in a little draw string bag which I thought was a really nice touch.
Here are my thoughts and feelings on the products I received this month.
This small hairbrush is basically their version of a Tangle Teezer. These briushes are supposed to be more gentle on your hair. In my eyes, my Tangle Teezer can never be replaced, but I think I will throw this in my gym bag. It’s a nice little addition.
Beauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleanser
This smells lovely and it’s always handy to have mini body washes for travel. I am terrible at describing scents, it’s not overly floral, or overly sweet, it’s just a perfect feminine scent without being overly girly. The full size is £8.00 which I think is a little steep for a body wash, so I will enjoy the mini size but won’t be purchasing the full size.
Laqa&Co Lip Pencil in Humble Brag
This was a really cute, good sized, lip pencil, similar to the Revlon Balm Stains or the Clinique Chubby Sticks. It was a little drying but that helped with the staying power. It lasted a good few hours and held up ok when I was eating and drinking which was impressive. This colour is a very bright pink which clashes a tad with my ginger hair, but when I decide to go back to brunette, I will definitely be using this.
Benefit the Professional: License to Blot
I have only tried this once so far, but I did actually notice a difference in my shininess. I wear powder foundation and I do tend to get oily in my tzone and this did make a difference. I applied this after I cleansed and moisturised on my forehead and down my nose. It was very smooth and left a nice base for my powder foundation. I shall keep testing this over the month to see if I notice a dramatic difference.
John Masters Organics Citrus & Neroli Detangler
I applied this detangler onto wet hair and ran my fingers through my hair to distribute it and get rid any knots in my hair. My hair isn’t overly tangley so it’s difficult to tell if this really works… The smells though is really lovely and stayed in my hair over night and until the next day, always a bonus!
Laura Mercier Face Polish
I do love a good exfoliator, it’s important to exfoliate your skin to get rid of all the dead skin cells (ew). I tend to exfoliate once a week because I have sensitive skin. This face polish has a great consistency because it’s very grainy and you can really feel it working. The scent is pretty neutral which I like too. A little bit goes a long way so I’m hoping the mini sample size will last me a while. This was also great timing as I recently ran out of my Origins exfoliator.
Overall, I am really happy with the products I received. For £6.47, I got a lot of products that I will definitely use. I am doing lots of travelling in October so they will definitely come in handy. I’ve seen a little preview of the October boxes which you have the option to choose between 2 boxes; one is designed by my favourite magazine Stylist and the other is by Birchbox. Click here to see a preview of what’s to come in October! I can’t wait to try some new products next month.
I ventured out on Monday into Melbourne CBD to check out the Melbourne Fashion Week City Square tent. Filled with freebies and runway shows, Melbourne’s most stylish were out in full force.
The weather in Melbourne at the moment is so gorgeous, unexpected by those who run the tent, as I was told they had installed heating systems in case the models got cold! It was 23 degrees outside!
On offer all week in City Square are free nail, eyelash, hair and lip bars. I jumped at the chance to pick up some tips and some free stuff… who doesn’t love free stuff right?!
First stop: Nails by Kit.
As far as I know, they are the first company in Australia to do the nail sticker art. I chose a floral design, and the girl who put them on is one of the actual image designers. On one hand, this was cool, but on the other, she wasn’t that great at putting them on. They lasted all day but by the time I got in the shower, half of them had fallen on. I now (one day later) have one bare hand and only 4 remaining on the right. I can’t tell whether this is down to the quality of the stickers or the application. I guess I’ll have to try them again to give a full review of them. My friend Danielle had a bright leopard print pattern on her nails which looked super cute, but hers have also fallen off.
Moving on from nails, I moved onto the Mecca Cosmetics Lip Bar, where the makeup artist chose a colour, from either the Kit or Smashbox ranges. She chose a Kit Lipstick for me, a bright fuschia which I think she said was called ‘Head Turner’. The lipstick has a matte finish and was not drying at all which was a nice change. It lasted at least 5 hours without reapplying. You must excuse the massive eye bags in the photo ! Sleepy times!
Next stop: Hair. Kevin Murphy Style Bar
Now the 2 hair dressers that were working in the tent were curling the majority of people’s hair. I have incredibly long hair so decided that I didn’t want that. It literally takes hours to curl all my hair properly. Even though they were working really fast, I just thought I would be there forever. So I decided to just add a pop of colour to my ends. They were using a Kevin Murphy Colour Bug, which is a little ball and brush that contains coloured powder. This in theory is a really great product. Its a wash in wash out powder that comes in Pink, Purple or Orange and is great if you fancy changing up your look for one night. The only problem is that the powder goes everywhere! Luckily i was wearing dark clothing so it wasn’t noticeable that the colour was transferring to my clothes. If i was to use this again I would put a product through the ends of my hair first, and then the colour. I think it would stick a lot better. But here is the finished look, I really like it.
I’ve wanted to put a different colour in my ends for quite a while and this has given me motivation to get it done. Here is my inspiration, Kate Beckinsale, I think she is just stunning!
The final step of my Fashion Week make over is eyelashes. Mecca were giving away pairs of Japonesque eyelashes and applying them. I had a sneaky look and noticed that they were of course using Duo Lash Adhesive instead of the glue that comes with the lashes. Not that I know what the Japonesque glue is like, but all beauty addicts know that Duo is the best. I wanted to get some lashes that were full looking, but didn’t look like I was wearing falsies.
I love these lashes! They weren’t heavy and they look so natural, I defo will be buying more of these. You can see a bit of the purple dye on my forehead. Fail by the hairdresser.
I caught some of the David Jones runway show too. The theme was the races, so lots and lots of hats! Shame none of those were free !
That’s it really for my little experience at day one of fashion week. I might head out again this week, ah the joys of quitting my job 😛 More freebies and runways to be seen!
Ciao darlings xx
